Avène, a brand with history


The legend started in a small town, Avène, located in south west of France, Languedoc Roussillon region.

1736
The discovery of the medical quality of Saint Odile spring in Avène:
A horse belonged to the Marquis of Rocozels was turned loose to roam the slopes of the Black Mountain in southwest of France due to severe skin disease. It found a thermal spring near Avène. After drinking from the spring and rolling in its waters, the horse's coat became shiny again and soon it’s skin disease was completely cured.

1743
the Marquis of Rocozels, who was then the owner of the site, builds the first thermal spring facility in Avène to treat patients suffering from atopic dermatitis, eczema, psoriasis, and burns

1826
Avène’s thermal spring facility is recommended by many scientific leaders in dermatology such as Jean-Louis Alibert.

1871
Avène Thermal spring water is sent to the USA for victims of the Great Fire of Chicago.

1874
The reputation of the Avène thermal spring center quickly grows, and Avène Thermal spring water, known for its soothing properties to treat skin diseases, is acknowledged by the French government to be of “public benefit”.

1966
Avène Hydrotherapy center is approved for reimbursement by the French Social Security System.
Mr. Pierre Fabre, who is from the Saint Odile area and then is the owner of Pierre Fabre Laboratories, restores the 100-year-old Avène thermal spring center and develops the business around the center whose industrial activities have been threatened for many years.

1975
Avène Hydrotherapy Center is purchased by Pierre Fabre Laboratories (the 2nd largest private pharmaceutical company in France today).

1989
A full line of skincare products is created using Avène thermal spring water as the key ingredient to bring the benefits of Avène to the rest of the world.

1990
Not far from the old baths, a new Avène Hydrotherapy Center is opened with modern day facilities to accommodate up to 2,000 patients. The Hydrotherapy Center is connected directly to the source of the spring to ensure the quality of Avène Thermal spring water.

2005
Expansion of the Avène Hydrotherapy Center to accomendate
to up to 4,000 patients.
